Sheet vinyl is the least forgiving floor we sell to measure, and it is worth understanding why. It comes off a roll in fixed widths, it is cut to the shape of your room, and it cannot be stretched or made longer. Get the measure wrong and the material is wasted — there is no trimming your way out of it. That is the main reason we insist on measuring every job ourselves rather than working from figures over the phone, and why the measure is free.
Rooms are also rarely the neat rectangles people assume. Walls bow, doorways create awkward returns, and a kitchen has units, an appliance recess and a threshold to work round. A proper template of those shapes is what produces a floor that sits tight to every edge instead of one with a gap behind the washing machine stuffed with sealant.
Once it is down, sheet vinyl earns its keep. It is fully waterproof, usually laid in one piece so there is no join for water to find, warm and soft underfoot compared with tile, and simple to keep clean. Cushioned and slip-resistant grades are available if comfort or grip matters in your house.
As with any thin floor covering, what is underneath shows through, so floorboards normally need hardboard or ply over them first and concrete may need a latex screed. We assess that at the measure and price it as its own line.
